    Best Time to Visit

It’s packed with tourists but it’s hard to beat summer in the French capital, when people-watching from a café terrace or sunbathing in a park are the most strenuous activities necessary.

    What to Pack

Your finest attire. This is chic city and you’ll want to fit in.

    General Tips

Since the 16th Century the French capital became a “city of art,” attracting Europe’s leading painters and sculptors to the city and becoming the focal point of movements such as 18th Century Baroque and 19th Century Romanticism. By the turn of the 20th Century, Impressionism, Expressionism and Cubism all evolved here.

The Louvre is of course the place to start for art, along with the Pompidou, but other highlights include the Musee Rodin, d’Orsay and the Grand Palais. Performing arts centers include the Opera Garnier and Opera Bastille for ballet and opera, the Bobino and Mogador for theater, and Le Lido and L’Olympia for music. Visitors may want to be sure they are in town during the biannual Paris Fashion Week, the March Art Paris Fair, August’s Rock en Seine music festival or Fete de la Musique in June when all manner of performing artists take the streets.
